The Trout and Red-Fish bite is on. David and Kim Zachery, and Rick Germano had a limit of Red-Fish this week. Captain Eric Moody and client had 12 Trout and two Reds. Cricket Mobley and Eddie Logger had a limit of Trout and Bass two days last week. Almost every boat returning to the dock is bring in fish.
Trout and Bass red schooling up in preparation for the winter migration up river. These fish feed heavily this time of the year, putting on weight for the winter. This and the fact that they are schooling means that once fish are found you can usually catch good numbers of them.
The preferred fishing technique is float fishing with live bait. Shrimp is the bait of choice and can be found at area bait shops. Mud Minnows and finger Mullet are also effective. Trout and Reds can be found feeding near oyster bars. Algae and plankton growing on the shells provide a food source and cracks and crevices provide protection from predators. The only way to effectively fish shell bars with out hang ups is with a float rig.
The traditional Trout cork, six to 12 inches long, round, and red on top and white on the bottom has been used for years. This cork is fished below a slip knot, allowing the angler to change depths according to needs. The Cajun Thunder float was introduced a few years ago. This float has a stainless steel wire, about three times longer than the float, running through it. The wire has plastic or mettle balls on either side of the float. These balls make a clicking sound imitating surface feeding fish when the cork is jerked with the rod tip, thus attracting fish.
These floats often out fish the Trout cork in water depths less than 10 feet.
