With the world events that happened the past 6 months, we ended up opening up later than normal and just did our first trip of the year yesterday. Of course, we were still doing personal fishing trips here and there, but now things start for real.
The past few days the Chinook fishing has been good on both 3 inch Silver Horde spoons, white hutchies in places where we are seeing squid and splatterback needlefish hutchies when fishing close to the bottom. The Chinook seem to be in quite a few different locations. Yesterday our guide Keith fished Austin, Cree, Effingham, Sargason bank and the Red Can and caught fish in each place—though the biggest fish came from the Red Can. Squid are showing up though we have been finding them in some not so normal locations. Our guide Dan was fishing a couple days ago and managed a 23 and 25 lb Chinook among about 15 hooked in one area with a bunch of squid hanging around. We love squid fishing here, so this is exciting!
The Lingcod fishing has been mostly good, which is normal this time of year. Lingcod are one of my favorite fish to eat and provide a great alternative to Halibut when the weather is too challenging further out.
If you are wanting to come fishing in Ucluelet with us this summer we are at an accommodation shortage since the big resorts have not yet fully opened. You can check out our website for our fishing packages. We have very little ocean view accommodation but still have some cabins available.
Tight lines,
Sam Vandervalk
