Salmon Fishing Report

Getting out fishing this week has been a wet experience for some. A lot of guides have been spending their time fishing around Meares Bluff, and Cree and Austin Island Just outside the Boundary for Pacific Rim National Park. The bait of choice seems to be anchovy rolled with about a one fathom leader. The coyote spoon is also a favorite with varying amounts of success. Chinook and Coho Salmon are being caught in the top 100 feet or so in these areas and if you put your time in you should do reasonably well.

If the seas are calm inside and outside of the Lighthouse and South bank are still producing salmon as well as a few halibut. For the more adventuress soul, pounding up to the west towards Portland Point and the Hyson Bank is producing nice quality salmon in numbers that make it well worth the run.

Overall the Salmon Fishing is picking up as we start to roll into our peak season.

Halibut Fishing Report

Halibut fishing is usually concentrated on La Perouse bank, but the Wreck is producing nice quality, (about 280 feet drift fishing with spreader bars and bait) if you find yourself running into lots of dog fish try switching your herring for a grub bait. More often than not you can also scratch up a salmon at the Wreck as well.

The Shallows is also a great starting point if you are more interested in fishing for both salmon and halibut at the same time, a great place for spending the day catching a variety of salmon, halibut, lingcod, and a few other ground fish.

Overall the Halibut Fishing is picking up right where it left off last season.

Bio: Skipper Dave grew up in Port Alberni (former Salmon Capital of the World) and at 13 he "broke in" working in the commercial fleet where the life long desire of living life at sea was etched in his soul. The transition to charter guide was a natural progression as the commercial industry collapsed. Work ethic and productivity were instilled in this young man at a young age and he has often been referred to as one of Ucluelets top guides. He has everything to offer, experience, a beautiful vessel, and the best looking deckhand in the fleet.
