Walleye fishing in Lake Erie has been super great for the past few months as we are enjoying the best year for catching walleye in quite some time. The awesome hatch of 2003 has caused tons of 16-18" fish to be available to be caught allowing for easy catching of Ohio's favorite sport and eating fish. The Action lately has been phenomenal with limit catches coming happening in 2-4 hours most days. Hot areas around the Lake Erie Islands this week have been the area between Ballast Island and Middle Island in 32 ft of water, off the SW corner of Kelley's island in 22-25ft of water, North of the light off of the break wall at Cedar Point in 25-35ft of water. These areas should continue to produce good numbers of fish in the near future. On the Ontario side of the border, the west side of Pelee Island in 29-33ft of water has been excellent along with the deeper waters surrounding the Hen and Chicken Islands. Nice catches have also been reported off of Lighthouse point on Pelee and off of Middle Ground shoal. Look for the hot walleye bite to continue right on through August, September and October!
Perch Bite
Perch fishing has been GREAT lately. Good catches have been coming in from the area NE of Kelley's island and also the area east of Middle Bass and Ballast islands. 30-45ft of water has been the norm as far as depths go. Also a good bite of Perch has been coming in from off the SE corner of Kelley's island in 25-30ft of water. Lake shiners are the best bet for bait.
Smallmouth Spotty - White Bass Around
Smallmouth fishing remains spotty even in the famous Pelee island area. There have been some fish around however, so it is not a total wipe out as far as the Bass fishing goes. The West side of Pelee has been the best for Smallies lately. Look for Bass in 20-35ft of water right now and in the evenings look for them to move up shallower to feed around sundown. Lots of White Bass showing up around reefs right now. A large school of White Bass has been hanging out off of the south side of Kelley's island lately. Look for the gulls flying and dipping down to the water and fish with spinners or crank-baits near the surface at a fast pace. White bass make for some fast action and not bad table far if eaten when fresh.
Good luck in all of your fishing adventures!
