Captain Judy's Saltwater Fishing Report
Inshore, Offshore, Freshies Suggestions, and "Little Miss Judy's Believe It or Not!"
Warsaw Sound
There have been sightings of large schools of menhaden in this area, which means "tarpon starting season" isn't far behind. There have been reports from the Tybee Roads areas of some tarpon feeding sightings. In the last weeks there has been more menhaden in this area than in the Warsaw sound. Your hand down best way to know for sure is the feeding of pelicans. Menhaden is a pelican's main diet. When the menhaden are gathering on the surface pelicans get a great opportunity for a feeding field day. With that being said, "look for diving pelicans!"
Menhaden are not jumpers! They are what I call "flippers!" They flip out of the water and make a distinct sound, which I have my customers listen for. I do have to say, "When I suggest listening for the flipping sound I do get some strange looks. However, after they hear it a couple of times they get it! Normally where there is a one or two menhaden flipping there are hundreds right below. With that being said "set up your cast and drop your net over this spot!"
Menhaden are great baits when use whole/alive, cut up, mashed, or grinded up. They offer up a scent that fish just love to hunt! For those fishing inshore or offshore they make great baits used any old way! Believe me, with the serious lack of baits offshore they are a welcome sight to us offshore bottom and live lining fishermen.
