After a brief return to WINTER early in the week, we returned to more normal weather for tis time of year. The weather and tides lined up nicely, and it looked like ideal conditions fo some night time snookin.
Fri Night- Luis and his son Carlos met me at 8pm and we were off in search of some snook. Temp gauge read between 77-79 degrees all night, and we were lucky enough to find moving water as soon as we left the dock. Carlos and Luis are return customers who had some tough breaks and slow action on our first trip, so I was excited to really get them on some fish. Action was hot from the first spot and continued on for most of the night. Our main bait of choice were spro mini bucktail jigs fished very slowly just below the surface. Fished with 10lb Power Pro and a 25lb fluro leader(try Team Fish, they make awesome flurocarbon!) you can really throw that little jig a long way. We hooked a few really nice snook right off the bat, but it seemed they had Carlos's number and just kept getting the better of him. After a few hours of good action on jacks and a couple of BIG moonfish(or lookdowns) we started to get into some good snook action. The big girls which had been showing up never made it to the party. But, the 18-25" fish made up in spirit what they lacked in size. Ended our four hour trip at midnight with a total of roughly 6 or seven snook, lots of jacks, 2 big moonfish, and one mystrery fish that got away. It was a fun trip with lots of bites.
Sunday night saw some rain showers early and some questionable weather in the forecast, but we lucked out and missed it all. Joe, Kristy, and Chris wanted to chase some dolphin around Sunday, but were concerned about the lingering swell offshore. After a rundown on the snook fishing lately they decided it was more their speed. Sometimes Sunday night can be really tough fishing after boats have run over the fish all weekend; but we lucked out and found some pretty hungry fish. DOA Shrimp and Spro mini's did the trick again. The size again left a little to be desired, but the numbers again made up for it. 7 snook, lots of jacks, and some more moonies. We did find a couple of schoos of mullet that had some big fish busting in them; efforts to entice them to our topwater plugs went unoticed.
Fishing is really good right now and will only get better as the water warms up. When we hit 80 degrees for a few days in a row, LOOK OUT! May is second only to September in my book for snook fishing, get out and get them now.
Good Luck Guys
