Captain Judy's Saltwater Fishing Report
Inshore Suggestions
Inshore Sheepshead Bite
To get the best chance at catching them you have to find them!
During this time of the year sheepshead are a good fish to target while fishing inshore. The first thing you need to think when targeting this fish is find and fish some sort of vertical structure. Dock pilings come to mind first. However, as you know there are plenty of them in the creeks and rivers. Not all dock pilings hold the interest of a sheepshead, but there is a way to know for sure. When sheepshead is feeding in an area such as a piling or sea wall they leave their "signature." This is what you cruise around looking for at low tide. It's not fishing, but it can turn out to be once these areas are found. Now I already know what you must be thinking, "what the heck is she talking about?" Well, I'm getting there!
The signature of a sheepshead is what is leftover after they have fed. When a sheepshead feed on grown on a piling "white areas can be seen." When the sheepshead feeds it basically removes the barnacles, oysters, or mussels, which leaves a clean white base. All other attachments will all be the same colors making the lighter color spots stand out especially when exposed at the low tide stage. This is when you know sheepshead is feeding in the area. Not only does this tell you where, but also the preferred depth in which they are feeding. It's amazing the information that can be gathered just by riding around and looking
