Weekly Fishing Reports (Smithers, Terrace, Kitimat, Prince Rupert and Meziadin North)

Noel Gyger

November 28 to December 5, 2010

Dear Fishing Friends:

SUMMARY: Mix bag of weather this week with rain and snow with milder temperatures. Excellent weather for winter Steelheading.

The Skeena River is in good shape but getting very late for good Steelheading. Most fish have gone through.

The Kalum River is in good shape and fishing for Steelhead is excellent. The Zymoetz (Copper) River is in good shape and fishing for Steelhead is fair.

The Lakelse River is in good shape and fishing for Steelhead and Trout is good.

The Kitimat River is very low and clean and the fishing conditions are excellent. The winter elements of the snow and lower temperatures prevail but if anglers dress appropriately the Trout fishing on the Kitimat River has been outstanding. I spoke to Lori from MK Bay and she noted that there not a lot of boats out this week fishing for Winter Chinook. Check out the Ron Wakita report below.

Prince Rupert; As predicted, the Winter Chinook have arrived. For those fishermen who venture out looking for some action on the water, I have heard of many anglers catching their limit of Chinooks in the past several days, averaging from 5 to 25lbs. If you would like to book a comfortable, warm Charter Boat for Winter Chinook and Dungeness Crab in Kitimat or Prince Rupert please contact me anytime. There is a New! guiding and fishing destination for 2011 being developed in the far northwest of BC and Alaska Rivers where you can fly or spin fish for Salmon, Steelhead and Trout until your arms drop off. Click on the Fishing Report BOOKMARK "Gary Miltenberger - New Destination Stikine River BOOKING NOW for 2011" Check out the full report for this great news and much, much more... This week guide reports came from Ron Wakita, Ariel Kuppers, and Jeff Carlson. Thank you to the fishing guides who sent reports and photos. It is very much appreciated!

Kitimat River

The Kitimat River is very low and clean and the fishing conditions are excellent. The winter elements of the snow and lower temperatures prevail but if anglers dress appropriately the Trout fishing on the Kitimat River has been outstanding.

There are not lots of anglers who venture out in the winter but the ones that do have had very good success.

Nov 3 One angler reports that "my fishing partner and I landed over 40 trout". "one was over 4lbs" Wow! Congratulations!

Nov 27 Ariel Kuppers. Jesse Houston and Justin Lowes landed 20 plus Cutthroat Trout. One of the Trout that Ariel landed was 18" long by 10" Girth. Wow! Nice Trout. They were Foat fishing with Gibbs http://www.gibbsfishing.com/ floats and Berkley http://www.purefishing.com/ 3" Power Bait Worms with Bubba's Bait http://bubbasbaitbarn.com/ worms. Congratulations Guys! Jesse also lost a Steelhead. Ariel was wearing a Simms http://www.simmsfishing.com/ Hat and Simms Windstopper Hooded Jacket and the Simms G4 Pro Breathable waders. He was using a Fenwick http://www.purefishing.com/ HMX Trout rod and an Okuma Avenger 20 reel with Maxima Perfection 10lb. line. Jesse was using his Loomis http://www.gloomis.com/ STR1025 GL3 Rod and an Ambassadeur http://www.rapala.ca/ 6500C3 with Maxima Ultra green 15lb test. Jesse was wearing Wardell 6012 Hybrid wader. Justin Lowes was using was Berkley http://www.purefishing.com/ Cherrywood rod with an Ambassadeur http://www.rapala.ca/ 5500C3 reel. Justin was wearing Bare Blackwater Breathable Waders. He was wearing Simms http://www.simmsfishing.com/ Packlite Jacket.

Summary

The Kitimat River will continue to produce good numbers of Trout through out the winter. The proven method is float fishing a Gibbs Float with the "Kitimat River Combo" The Kitimat River Combo is a Berkley http://www.purefishing.com/ Power Bait 3" worm comboed with a Bubba's Bait Barn http://www.bubbasbaitbarn.com/ worm. There are lots of Trout and the reports so far are that they are big.

Douglas Channel

I spoke to Lori from MK Bay and she noted that there not a lot of boats out this week fishing for Winter Chinook.

Nov 28 Victor Lick reports, "That's Winter Chinook fishing. They are here and the bite is on. Then as fast as it happens its off. I was out Saturday evening and released 1 shaker. It was a beautiful evening to be on the water after a cold snap. Not a ripple on the pond and the colors of a winter sunset. Anticipation was high for trying Sunday. Out on the water for sunrise. It was again calm with the odd flurry mixed in with some patchy blue sky. Scott and Nelson came down from Terrace and fished out of their boat this time. Together 2 boats working hard they only managed to release one fish forty three cm. I had equipment troubles. So headed to docks to lend a hand tarping a boat and repairing down rigger. That finished I headed out for the evening fish. I had just cleared the dock area when I hit a good fish. I made two quick runs then it was gone. It was a great day on the water. The seals have gone but for a few and the gulls where quiet. I saw about 8 large ocean Loons but they seemed to be coming up empty also.

Summary

There was not a lot of information from the Winter Chinook fishery this week. There were not lots of boats out in the Kitimat Harbor this week but there is always next week. Stay tuned!

NO PUBLIC HALIBUT FISHING IN BC - 2011

In 2003, the federal government gifted in perpetuity 88% of the annual harvest of halibut - a common property resource belonging to the people of Canada - to just 436 individual or businesses. Only 12% has been allocated for the over 100,000 public anglers who spend millions collectively each year. Under this unfair policy, public anglers may have to stop fishing for halibut by July 2011. Understand this is not a conservation Issue - the resource is healthy.

Make your concerns known to the Fisheries and Oceans officials who are protecting special interests.

Write the Minister: Hon. Gail Shea, PC, MP - Minister of Fisheries and Ocean, Parliament Buildings, Wellington Street, Ottawa, On K1AOA6

Come to the Delta Vancouver Airport Hotel on Wednesday December 1 2010 from 8:00 AM to 11:45 PM

For more information see" www.sportfishing.bc,ca

This was an Ad taken out by the Sport Fishing Institute of BC. Rob Alcock and the SFI team are working hard to negotiate with the DFO on behalf of all Recreational Anglers. They really need our support. All anglers should write or email Minister Gail Shea to share their thoughts of this Grossly unfair allocation of Halibut Stocks. Everyone who has fished Halibut or intends to in the future needs to be heard in Ottawa.

Please write or email the Minister and encourage everyone on your contact list to do the same. The voice of the majority of Recreational Anglers can be heard in Ottawa only if everyone does their share.

Dec 2 Glen Kilcup of Fish Hawk Guiding reports, "Here are a couple of shots with friends Jeff Langley and Ian Smith of Terrace. I fish allot with these o'l veterans and every outing is a different experience....no chance of dying on the trail with these guys cause you're too busy walkin'! We got together on a local river here in Terrace, and did real well for a couple of days fishing. These shots are from the second day. We had talked of fly fishing the runs but the wind was blowing just enough to make it a little uncomfortable. So out comes the hardware. Gibbs http://www.gibbsfishing.com/ Koho spoons silver with red stripe or fluorescent back or even a big fat chrome Gibbs Ironhead would do fine. I actually caught a couple on a 1/2 ounce chrome Croc. My best producer was a clean silver 65...WOW what action! The fish were fast and very aggressive! There's nothing more exciting when fishing than to have a big lunker come flying into shore at the tail end of your cast and attempt to clobber you! It was hard NOT to get excited! Well in the 2 days we fished, we saw so many fish charge into shore and pow! FISH ON!! Waters were so clear fish could be seen coming from a long way! Jeff and Ian used the Abu Garcia http://www.purefishing.com/ 6500 on 10'6 sticks from Berkley http://www.purefishing.com/. I was coffee grindin' with a Rapala http://www.rapala.ca RAPSX4I reel and an 8' stick from Shimano http://www.fish.shimano.com/ . We attempted to get a couple of underwater shots of the fish with our skin divers!! LOL A little bit of a different look for the viewers anyway that you don't often see. Great days with great guys and allot of co-operation from the great outdoors. Glen Kilcup Fishawk Guiding Congratulations Guys on some very nice Steelhead.

Thank You to everyone who provided info and photos for this report. It is much appreciated.

We are booking for next season. We are also offering Gift Certificates for Guided River Trips and Ocean Charters for Christmas. Anyone interested please contact Noel noel@noelgyger.ca.

Thank You to everyone for providing photos and info to this Fishing Report.

Good Health and Good Fishing!

Sincerely and Cheers Ron Wakita

Hi Noel, I have a client/friend that I've been fishing with in the Terrace and Smithers area for the past 10 years. We have been looking recently at land in order to put up a small fishing cabin but we've noticed that most land listings in the Terrace area are for large plots. I was wondering if you know of anyone that has a larger plot of land on the Skeena (around Usk would be perfect) that would be interested in subdividing out a section of about 1 or 2 acres. Walking access to Skeena would be nice but not necessary.

I would be able to handle the legal work and associated costs to subdivide, so I just need someone who might be interested in selling off a small piece of their land that they aren't using. Also, it would need to have vehicle access which we could do by registered right of way across sellers prop if unavailable otherwise. Contact Noel Gyger noel@noelgyger.ca if you have such property and I will put you in contact with the buyer.

About The Author: Captain Noel Gyger

Company: Noel Gyger Guided Fishing Adventures

Area Reporting: Northwest British Columbia Canada

Bio: My fishing and guiding history I was born in Smithers, B.C. Canada on December 25, 1946. I grew up there and fished the whole northwest area with my Grandpa, Percival (Percy) Benjamin Emerson. He loved to fly fish. His favorite Trout fly was the Royal Coachman. He built a cabin on Babine Lake where I spent most of my summer school holidays fishing and enjoying the outdoors. Thanks to him, I am hooked on "Sportfishing" and I've come to love every aspect of it. My lifetime goals are to save the wild Salmon, Steelhead and Trout of the entire northwest area of British Columbia and establish a "Quality" sport fishing guiding industry. These are lofty goals but I will strive every day to achieve them. They are "my life long calling". I have been married for 39 years and have three daughters and seven grandchildren. I am the owner of Noel Gyger - Weekly Fishing Report and Guided Fishing Adventures of 4012 Best Street, Terrace, BC Canada V8G 5R8 Tel/Fax (250) 635-2568 Cell (250) 631-2678 E-mail noel@noelgyger.ca Website www.noelgyger.ca I started fishing the Terrace area in the 1970's. On May 24, 1983 I assisted my friend to land an 83-pound Chinook on the Kalum River. It was the river record. That experience changed my life and I started into the fish guiding industry and began exploring and fishing rivers by jet boat. I pioneered drift boats on the Kalum and Kitimat Rivers and taught many folks how to row them. I've owned a fishing lodge and guide business (Northwest Fishing Guides & Lodge) along with my wife from 1986 to 2001 when we sold it and retired but my love for the industry is just too great and after five years - I am back.
