Fishing Report for Week of October 12, 2008 for Master Baiter's Sportfishing and Tackle

Fish Are Where You Find Them !
We've come into the time of the year that you can all but guarantee you'll come in with some worth while game fish at our World Famous Fishing grounds here in Puerto Vallarta. We're in the tournament season and some of the largest tournaments in the world, including the Bisbee tournament in Cabo all start the third week of October. If you take Cabo, Mazatlan, and Puerto Vallarta, we're all within 350 miles by sea from each other, closer than you may expect. With the recent Hurricane last week of Norbert, we're seeing an increase in the number of fish and the size of the game fish which have been boated in the last few days. This just makes a good time of the year, just that much better!
A result of this has been the number of Black Marlin and Blue Marlin that are being boated in the usual places of Corbetena and El Banco. Just yesterday, there were six boats at Corbetena, the least amount of 'Hook-Ups' for that day was three and the most was six hook-ups per boat! When you've got that sort of action, then the fishing is good by any ones yardstick, Now matter how jaded you are. The Marlin is worth paying attention to especially since they're running between 350 to 800 lbs. Sailfish are also here, but it seems they've bowed to Marlin as the predominant game fish in the area'
Corbetena has also just come to life when it comes to Dog Tooth Snapper, a.k.a. Pargo or as the technical scientific term for them is Cubera Snapper! They're a bottom fish and they can run between forty five and seventy pounds. So use those expensive electronics you have and find the shallows just off the rock. Chin hook a cut Skippie and toss is over the side. As it sinks, the Cubera will dart out and take the bait. Once this happens you'll need to remember to not let them turn their head. If they take line and make it back to the rocks'. Well lets just say you can't be 'asleep at the wheel' amigos! You'll think you've hooked into a sailfish from the way they fight!
Since we're talking about Corbetena, the Yellowfin there can run anywhere from 60 lbs to 300 lbs, it just depends on what you come across out there on a daily basis. Many reports have come in about 300 lb YFTuna, but not enough to make the vacationing angler receive a ny strong assurances of boating a Monster! It seems the average Yellowfin Tuna are in the 60 to 175 lb range. Still worth the trip, but don't get your expectations too far in the stratosphere'. The Yellowfin Situation holds true for El Banco as well. If you're dead set on boating that Finned Fantasy of a life time, just remember, 'They're Bigger At The Bank' amigos!
Speaking about the Bank, Marlin are here as well, along with Monster Yellowfin Tuna. Many charters have come back this week with Yellowfin over 200 lbs, this makes the bank more consistant than Corbetena at the moment in regards to Yellowfin Tuna. But like always this can change in a heart beat. El Banco also has Mahi Mahi (aka Dorado or Dolphin), Sailfish, Rainbow runners and a host of other game fish. Well worth your fuel dollar and you won't come back with an empty fish box.
Punta Mita, El Morro and the Marietta Islands have had a dance with clean and dirty water. But with the seasonal rains coming to an end as we enter Tourisms high season the conditions are changing to a more favorable state for the anglers looking for fish on a budget. Sailfish are the prime players in these areas as late, but Mahi Mahi, Skip Jack Tuna, Bonito, Jack Crevells, and more are there waiting for your bait!
For the folks who read my articles on line, if you're considering a Charter and you're considering several locations to visit, remember this, Charters in Puerto Vallarta are cheap by comparison to Florida, Hawaii, even Cabo. Fuel prices while still high, are less than half what they're paying for Marine Diesel in those other locations. What does this mean to you as an angler? Well, this means more money in your pocket or more days on the water. Either way, you come out ahead! The strong dollar is making Mexico more affordable as well, making your vacation dollar stretch like never before in Puerto Vallarta. So next time you're in PV, make a point to visit Marina Vallarta shops, restaurants, and of course Master Baiter's Sportfishing and Tackle!
