We are going to have to rename fishing to catching!!! It has been unbelievable. We've caught Snook, Red fish, and Tarpon. Basically, if it swims in the bay, we've been able to catch it. I can say one thing… there is a lot of Sharks around on the flats in the bay. I have yet to do any Shark fishing but I would think that they should be biting. The water temperature is one of the biggest factors with Shark fishing, as well as many of the other types of fish. Shark fishing is usually the best when it is really hot. It is great during the summer. Let's get back to what we are catching because it has been awesome.
Let's begin with the big great Silver kings! That's right… the Tarpon are here and were catching them. There are some great fish around. Most of the Tarpon that we have been catching have been up in the bay around the Skyway Bridge. This is usually where we start our season out and it is here. We have hooked some really big Tarpon. As you can see in the picture, this young man did a really great job catching this fish and it was a great fight.
Snook… these fish have not been hiding. We have been catching most of these fish a little later in the morning, but we've caught some in the early morning. The biggest reason that we have not been catching the Snook in the morning has been because of the Red fish craziness. To get back to the Snook… we've been catching a lot of great fish. We did manage up the record for the Snook of the year – it's now up to 38 inches. What a fish. Again this was the first time this gentlemen had ever been Snook fishing. To say no more it was a great fish with a tough fight.
Red fish….like I said earlier, this should be called catching!!! We've had some huge numbers and the size was right there with it. I mean to tell you, I don't remember catching this big of Red fish in a while. Usually you will get in a good school and catch a few big Reds, but lately we can't find a small one. Most of the fish that we've been catching have been over 30 inches. Man, you want to talk about a fight on the light tackle? Hook a Red fish that is over 30 inches on 10 lbs tess fishing line and have some thing. The fish in the School that we've been fishing have toped out at 35-36 inches. This is just the beginning. It's going to just get better as the summer comes closer.
