Sweet summertime! Summertime is here and it has made for some awesome days on the water. Some days have been a bit slower than others, but for the most part, fishing has been great. When the tide is not moving fast or the moon isn't just right some species of fish are hard to catch. We call some days catching days and others just fishing days, but no mater what the day brings; being out on the water is great.
We were wondering if the tarpon would ever show up this year. Well, we don't have to wonder anymore. The tarpon have indeed appeared and there are a lot of them. It has been an outstanding tarpon season so far, and this is just the beginning, we have quite a few months to go. The Professional Tarpon Tournament Series in Boca Grande, Florida started last weekend. We have been fortunate enough to fish the tournament series the last three years, and are fishing it again this year. The ladies day tournament last Saturday was a success. We hooked a number of fish, boated two fish, and weighed a 114 lb fish, which put us in fifth place. The ladies did a great job! Our team, Myels.com/Castaway Charters, fished the tournament series on Sunday and had a great start to the series. We hooked a number of fish and managed to leader and release two of them. The second fish is the fish of the year to date. Man 'o man, what a great tarpon! We fought the fish for roughly 1 hour and 30 minutes before the tournament was called. Once the tournament has officially ended, you are only allowed 30 minutes overtime to gaff the fish. With only 2 minutes left in overtime, we lost the fish. Due to lack of time, we were at the point where we just had to try to pull the fish as hard as we could. Unfortunately, the line broke. What a great fish to kick off the series. We still have five more weeks of the series.
Many snook, redfish, and trout are around this time of year. We've been fishing in either really shallow areas or areas where we haven't really fished much before. In my opinion, the fish are in these different areas because of the different weather we've had this year. We've started getting some rain, and the water temperature is over 80 degrees, so the fish will still to move around over the next few weeks.
