First, I'd like to appologize to readers for the delay in reporting. Unfortunately, July and August are usually very slow months in the charter industry. Most of my recent trips have consisted of repeat customers that live locally and enjoy calm seas and warm weather. The good news in all of this is that except for dolphin or mahi the fishing has been pretty good. One of the keys to success has been to fish very early or very late once the water temps have dropped a bit.
Fishing is all about patterns and we've had a definate pattern as of late. Kingfish have been biting very well in the early morning and that has triggered a dilema in the area of bait fishing. Everyone knows that a good supply of bait is crucial to catching quality fish but what good is it after the bite has shut down. Thankfully, I've been able to solve this problem thanks to Pedro from Ashley live bait. Picking up my bait from him has allowed us to capitalize on the hot morning bite and put together some nice catches.
Jason and his friend enjoyed their short day on the water by catching a mixed bag of bonito, yellowtails, and a nice mutton. We also lost a couple of nice fish to pulled hooks (one straightened the hook),kings also managed to cut us off a time or two.
Pierre, along with his girlfriend, mom and dad enjoyed a beautiful day on the water. Pierre and his family were down here from Canada for a little R and R. The group caught a nice mutton along with a load of yellowtails. After catching a mess of fish for the table we decided to fish a nice edge that had formed and within minutes one of our rods was double over. Unfortunately this fish along with two other came unglued during the battle due to pulled hooks or cut-offs. Overall, they had a great time and are now looking forward to fishing again.
Yesterday, I fished with James and his gang from Ft. Lauderdale. Fishing with this group is always a lot of fun because they spend the day poking fun at each other. We left the dock at about 6:30 a.m. hoping to get in on the hot morning bite. I knew it was going to be a good day when the first bait got eaten before I could get the second out. We boated a nice king in the 15# range followed by another fat one estimated at about 25#. We then caught about a half dozen bonito before boating another smaller king. After the bite seized up we made a run in search of yellowtails and muttons. To make a long story short, we caught two muttons, a nice hogfish and a couple dozed yellowtails. The boys were happy and are now itching to do it again.
If you enjoy calm seas, warm weather, and good fishing now is the time to head out. The key is to be flexible and target what is available at the time. I have many dates open in September so book now in order to get the date you want. Below you'll find some pictures of recent action.
