Well before we start talking about the new year lets start out with December... In December every year I commercial fish for mullet in the world renowned mullet run. This years mullet run was pretty dismal with record high temperature in December and red-tide from Tampa Bay to Boca Grande it made mullet fishing down right tough. (Related News Article) We managed to catch our fair share but, we rally had to work out butts off for them and all told we were about 55%-60% down from where we normally end up. Oh well some years are good and some are bad, you have to take the good with the bad .
I have not been fishing to much since the 1st of the year because I am waiting on my new boat (see pics) which should be finished in the middle toward the end of February. I have been out a couples times but I'm getting ready to sell my current boat while my other boat is getting finished up. I have been talking with several other guides who say the Sheephead fishing is on fire with most of the fish being caught around dock near the passes on shrimp. Also, the Redfish have been biting on the warmer days on the shallow grass flats around the Bulkhead and Terra Ceia Bay. The Trout bite is picking up as the water temperature starts to stabilize. Most of the fish have been biting jigs but some have been eating pilchards when you can find them.
