If You're Fishing Season is Done
Every year about this time many of us turn to other sports like hunting or just decide it's too cold to fish and decide it's time to put your fishing gear and boat away for the winter. Well like everything else with a little care and thought you can make your opening trip after the winter a little easier!
First of all let's take-care your boat, every boat owner has a big investment in their boat and just a few easy steps can be very helpful when you get back on the water next year. First of all I would pull the prop off the boat make sure there is no line wrapped around it and if it has dings or collision marks have it polished and repaired by a professional. Next if your boat does not have an on-board charger than your batteries will need to be maintained all winter long and there is a couple of ways to do it! First if it does have an on-board charger keep it plugged up so the batteries keep a charge. If you're without an on-board charger pull the batteries out of your boat and put them on a wood surface and once every few weeks charge them, make sure they are properly filled with water all winter long as you can kill the battery if it is idle without proper fluid in it. If you are lucky enough to be able to put your boat in a garage or something similar then open the compartments and make sure they dry inside before closing them. Take the rear plug out of the boat and leave it out until your first fishing trip next year.
You're tackle is probably the next biggest investment after your boat; it also needs to be taken care of during the idle winter time. The first thing is to remove all your tackle from the boat; hooks and baits will rust and reels will clog up and rust from moisture so get them out of the boat where they are not exposed to moisture. Have the reels cleaned and oiled properly, open up all tackle boxes and remove and clean all baits and wipe out the boxes to remove moisture.
Every step you take now will just make it easier to get on the water in the spring, so don't be foolish and just unhook your boat without taking time to get it and your tackle ready to be idle over the winter!
