Over the years I have developed a preference for crank baits that suspend. I remember several years ago when all diving crank baits were made out of balsa wood, and the only way you could get them to suspend was to tape some weighted strips on them. I was constantly fooling with the amount of tape it took to get the bait to sit in the water, and then of course you had to put it in the correct position or it would drop from the nose or rear. Anyways despite the hassle crank baits have come a long way, now you can use one already balanced to suspend and is much better than the older ones. Certainly as strong and much more movement in the water, and easier to crank to there recommended depths. These changes in the past years have given the bass fisherman an advantage. Because these baits are made of plastics, they get much more movement in the suspending position. You have a variety of types to choose from, and you can use them in different situations for all of the different seasons and patterns of the year. In Guntersville where we have so much grass the ability to keep them just over the grass and rocking gets you a lot of bites; you can keep it in the strike zone longer and work different depths with the same bait by changing the tip position of your rod. Line size has also made a lot of difference in suspending baits, you can rig the same size suspending crank bait on heavy line and it will not only achieve different depths than light line, but the movement of the bait is greater.
One thing I can tell you is that I have always caught more fish on a suspending crank baits no matter whether I put suspending tape on them or not; they just catch more fish.
