Under Size Crank Baits for Fall Fishing
When times get tough as they often do in the fall, small crank baits offer a good alternative for lunker bass. Sure it's true that small crank baits catch small bass, but every now and then the bigger fish just attack as small meal as it offers easy prey for the largemouth bass. The other important note to remember is that when times are tough for the tournament angler as they are now, small crank baits can get you a bag of fish that may just earn you a check.
There are a variety of small crank baits on the market, and instead of trying to convince you to buy some sponsor bait; I'm going to give you the critical assets of what I like and why I like certain looks. The first important issue to me is I believe there are two types of wobbles on the market. The first being crank baits that kind of vibrate when you move it and the other being one that truly wobbles back and forth. In the fall I find that crank baits that do not have a wide wobble work better for a couple of reason.
The first being that the vibrating movement does not hang in the grass as easy as the wide wobbling crank baits do. Secondly vibrating type give off more noise and attract more bites as they seem to produce more reaction bites than those with a wide wobble. Also, manufacturers seem to put bb's in the vibrating types and hence the noise factor. Lastly vibrating type crank baits allow for a more accurate cast by the angler as they are weighted to do so.
Probably one of the most important issues is a strong black iodized set of hooks, also a little size so you have a chance to hang bigger fish. Most of today's crank baits are manufactured this way, but some are not. I personally would not purchase those that the hooks are not adequate, or if I do then I will change the hooks myself.
