The waters of the coast of Vancouver Island and in the protected waters of Barkley Sound have been excellent the last few days. Calm water and short tides have helped the halibut fishing out at the Big Bank become very productive. This being the week when the peak of the halibut migration takes place (halibut move from 1,000 feet to 250 feet of water) and short tides the limiting on halibut has been very easy. Most of the fish have been averaging 25 pounds. Last week the biggest recorded halibut of the year was picked up at Sail Rock found between Ucluelet and Barkley Sound. Fil Jorge picked this 107 halibut up on the troll.
Chinook fishing offshore has continued to be very good also. Best catches this week have been Southbank and Great Bear. Silver spoons with a five foot leader behind a green flasher have been excellent. In Barkley sound Swale Rock, Meares, and Austin have been the best areas with our guides picking up limits with most of the fish averaging 10 to 18 pounds.
