Barkley Sound chinook fishing has been fairly steady over the past week. Swale Rock, Meares and Austin have produced some nice feeder springs in the teens. There have been a few chinook up to 22 pounds. Around Swale Rock the fish have been found in he 130 foot depth of water and have been hitting green spatter back hootchies. A J79 plug has also been successful. Hootchies with 42 to 44 inch leader behind a plaid or green hotspot flasher have been working very well. On Wednesday guide Jon hit 4 chinook ranging 13 to 17 pounds. Just west of Swale out towrds the surfline is Meares and Austin. Chinook have been up to 22 pounds and have been hitting anchovy in a Rhys Davis green teaser head. Greeny-blue hootchie colors have also been working. Most of the chinook have been in 80 to 100 feet of water. This is the time of year that Meares and Austin become very hot. The first of the west coast migrating salmon come into feed on the rich bait balls. Often the sport fisherman can take limits fairly quickly. This years chinook and coho season is forecast to be extremely good. One can take advantage of the many lodges and resorts in Barkley Sound and enjoy some of the worlds best salmon sport fishing.
