The migratory push of salmon down the West Coast of Vancouver Island is definitely on. At this time of year salmon returning to their rivers to the south are usually coming into the Sound to feed on the plentiful and rich bait fish. Often areas of the surfline have some great fishing in June and July. Usually the Chinook show up first followed by Coho which eat a lot and often put on a pound a week. Over the last couple of days the areas of Cree Island, Meares, and Kirby Point have had some good fishing. The fish have really liked anchovy in a Rhys Davis green-glow teaser head behind a green-glow hotspot flasher. Watermelon and copcar coyote spoons and white hootchie have been working also.
The fish have been between 75 and 120 feet of water and have been most active on tide changes.
We are expecting the migratory flow to get better with more salmon constantly coming into the area daily. Fishing for these fish in June and July can be a lot of fun and very productive. Beginning in late July and early August Barkley Sound will have its own return of Chinook and Coho with many returning back to Port Albernis' Robertson Creek Hatchery. Fishing for salmon adventures are filling in the area. Call Doug at 250 724 2502 for your trip at 250 724 2502 or e mail dlindy@shaw.ca
