BIG LAKE
Fishing really improved this week according to several reports. "Solid tackle busting redfish action continues to dominate the fishing scene" says Hackberry Rod and Gun's Captain Buddy Oaks reporting lots of reds being caught. Last week Hackberry anglers dodged the rains of tropical storm Fay and this week they are praying to be spared from Gustav.
On the trout scene, Oaks said speckled trout are being caught from one end of the fishery to the other "with the best trout action being at the Big Jetties when the water remains clean." Live shrimp and mullet are best among the live bait and anglers are using some soft plastics in the mornings on reefs located near the ship channel. Live bait seems to work better during in the day.
Additional info which might be of interested to some anglers is that Hackberry R & G maintains a boat which is set up exclusively for night fishing and is very popular with anglers wanting to avoid the hot daytime temperatures. The night trips catch mostly specs with a few flounder. The boat, The Night Stalker, is set up for 6 guests and 1 guide plus an assistant and have been catching limits of speckled trout of 90 to 100 fish in less than 2 hours the past few days.
The limit for specs is currently 15 per angler per day with a 12 inch minimum length. Calcasieu Point's Elaine Huck reports that fishing last Friday through Sunday was awesome and anglers didn't have to go far. Turners Bay produced big trout and some quality flounder.
Rock ledges along the channel was also great for redfish with LNG Canal still producing flounders, specks and even some big croakers. Non boaters are also catching fish off the wharf as well as crabs.
