Calcasieu Point is now back open but only on Friday, Saturdays and Sundays at this time. Cal. Point's Elaine Huck started off her report with four words..."Fishing has been unbelievable!!" She states that anglers begin cleaning fish at 10:00 a.m. and keep cleaning all day long with limits on specks, reds and flounders all common these days.
Huck, who always notices and encourages women and children who show up to fish, reports "It is unreal the number people who are taking advantage of such great fishing with as many woman and kids fishing as there are men." The entire fishery is producing fish as water quality is super all over the lake. Hucks states that they are catching fish from the Interstate Bridge to the Gulf!
In getting a bit more specific, she mentioned that The Weirs (Lambert's and Grand Bayou) are the hottest with Turners Bay not far behind. If anglers do not want to run all the way north or south she states that the banks of he LNG Canal are doing producing a lot of fish.
I also was able to talk to Captain Erik Rue of Calcasieu Charters who had just returned from the RedFish Cup Championship and said his captains and customers were catching limits everyday and the bite was so good that live bait has not been necessary. They are catching a lot of fish following the birds and fishing lead head jigs with soft plastics in both quarter and three-eighth ounce size.
Local favorite soft plastics include Berkley Gulp! (both 3 and 4 inch) in New Penny, Natural Shrimp, Nuclear Chicken and Nuclear Chicken Glow. Others favorites are Stanley Wedgetails, Sand eels and Hackberry Hustlers. Most guides use 12 pound test and many of them use Berkley Trilene Big Game line.
