For the most part, fishing is somewhat slow in the area, says local angler and tackle store manager, Greg Vidrine. Vidrine regularly talks fishing with some of the areas top anglers and most have not fished much the past 8-10 days because of high winds and weather systems. Reports from the West Cove area were probably the most optimistic as a few quality trout were being caught on top water baits.
There's good news for the flounder fishermen as the migration patterns indicate they are moving back into the area lakes and bays. Vidrine seems to get really pumped when he mentions flounder. His favorite method for flounder is using the Flounder Pounder tipped with Berkley Gulp! Swimming Mullet. Waters conditions remain stained in most of Big Lake so darker colored baits have been the most successful.
Reds are still in excellent numbers on the southeast portion (Weirs) of Lake Calcasieu. This area has been stacked with reds since the weeks after Hurricane Rita. Basically, if weather conditions allow you to get to The Weirs at Lambert and Grand Bayous, and you work a jig head with Berkley Gulp!, Stanley Wedgetails, Hackberry Hustlers or Norton Sand eels, you should get you line tightened.
West Cove does seem to be on local anglers targeted area as Lake Area anglers David Smith and Chris Vallett had a decent trip there over the past weekend. They got into several big trout with a mid-afternoon top water bite with Super Spooks. What a blast to catch big trout up top.
