BIG LAKE
Water temperatures moved up slightly the first part of the week and trout did move out to somewhat shallower water on flats off the ship channel. The numbers have been good on the northern part of the fishery around the 210 Bridge and Prien areas with lots of specs in 1.5 to 3 pound range and occasional 4 pounder. The bigger trout are still being caught, for the most part, by wade fishermen using slow-falling as well as suspending baits worked very slowly. Corkies and Thundersticks (suspending jerk bait) type baits are being used with success when worked over hard, sandy bottom structure.
Flourocarbon line, such as Berkley's 100% Flourocarbon seems to give a slight edge with this pattern as it is very sensitive, very little stretch on hook-set as well as it sinks so it helps keep the bait down in the strike zone. Big Lake Guide and Redfish Cup pro, Captain Kevin Broussard, reported having a fair day last Saturday, followed by an excellent day on Sunday.
Winds had the lake muddy/stained on Saturday but the winds backed off and Sunday was beautiful allowing them to get an early limit of trout working the birds in Turners Bay. Most were in the 2 pound range. Broussard also stated there were fish on a deeper bite in LNG with Berkley Saltwater Gulp!. Also, West Cove is still giving up some big trout and even a few big fish on topwater during warm-ups.
