Fishing reports from Big Lake continue to be phenomenal with the biggest challenge of most local anglers being finding a time to fish. Dustin Brock, being one of those fishermen we just described, talks a lot of fishing as an employee of Lake Charles Tackle but comes up short as far as having enough time on the water. Brock, who speaks often with numerous Big Lake fishermen, reports two of the hottest places on the lake are The Weirs area and Turners Bay.
What that says is water conditions are good in most areas of the fishery from north to south. Brock also stated that the 3 inch Berkley Gulp! Shrimp and Mullet have been some of their best sellers with New Penny, Natural Shrimp and Nuclear Chicken top colors.
Lake Charles pro angler, David Rabalais, fishes anywhere there is water and does a great job at all of it. He fishes Offshore, Inland Saltwater/Big Lake/Sabine, local rivers, Toledo, Rayburn as well as marshes. Currently on Big Lake, Rabalais states that trout are starting to relate more to the reefs which is a definite sign that summer is over and fall fishing is here. Also, birds are working well, especially on the central/southern end of the fishery.
Rabalais also stated that there are a lot of fish in the Prien Lake area which means that water quality is excellent in most parts of Lake Calcasieu. The hottest weather of 2008 is history but the hottest fishing is from now till the end of fall and beyond. The toughest decision many local anglers face is "Do I fish or do I hunt?" To keep from becoming frustrated many local sportsmen do both. Tough life, huh?
