Both duck hunting and fishing seems to be running neck n' neck or maybe neck n' scale as the case may be. "Ducks seem to be plentiful most mornings and afternoon fishing trips are producing consistant limits" says Captain Eric Rue of Calcasieu Charters.
Rue is located at one of the best known landings on the lake, Hebert's Landing which is located about mid-lake on the east side. Hurricane Ike beat up Herbert's pretty badly and things are just now getting back to somewhat normal conditions. Rue reports that for them they have been blessed in recents weeks with a good number of clients which helps to recover from the lost time/revenue due to the storm. On the duck hunting scene, they are finding a decent number of ducks but the geese (specklebellies) action has been outstanding.
Rue states that afternoon fishing trips are producing good numbers of both reds and specs (speckled trout). There is still some bird activity with anglers catching both reds and specs under the birds as anglers are using soft plastics with jig heads under popping corks as well as jighead/soft plastics without cork. As you would expect in the fall as water temperatures cool, good trout are also holding on reefs. Rue likes the Assassin shrimp in chartruse.
Reds are still plentiful at The Weirs as well as on a protected bank where anglers should target small points in the grass as well as cuts in the bank. One of the most consistant bait for reds is Berkley's Gulp! Saltwater Series. Top baits are Gulp! Shrimp and Swimming Mullet in both 3 and 4 inch versions.
Good duck hunting continues on the west side of the lake too as Captain Buddy Oaks of Hackberry R & G states that "Limits of Teal. Pintail, Gadwall and Widgeons continue to make it to the picking (plucking) house." After morning hunts Oaks says they break out the rods and reels and have been catching limits of reds, specs and flounder also are showing up in good numbers.
