Due to a strong frontal passage on Sunday morning, I was forced to cancel my charter for the day. Monday's forecast promised to be a little better. The wind did die down to about 15-20 out of the North. My clients, Scott and his son John, from around the Houston area, were ready to get out on the water. They had what you call cabin fever after having planned on two days of fishing and forced to cancel one. With the front bringing in cooler temps, it was a little crisp running out the Arroyo around 7:30 Monday morning. There was also a little mist in the air.
I headed straight to deep trout water, but with the strong north wind, the water was just a little too murky and rough. After about 15 minutes and no takers, we moved on to a favorite grass meadow. The tide was higher than usual and the water was crystal clear. It didn't take long for the bite to begin. The reds were there and even though we had heavy cloud cover and strong north wind, we were catching. The mist had stopped and it warmed up just a little making for a good morning to be out fishing.
What a great way for dad, Scott and his son, John to celebrate John's upcoming 24th birthday on Thursday. They had a great day on the water together catching eight reds and four trout plus other numerous hookups and breath taking blowups. I must admit I enjoyed fishing them and was happy I was able to put them on fish for this special occasion.
The lures de-jour for the day, Berkley Gulp and top waters.
