We launched from Durban Harbour at around 05h00, it was a lovely morning with virtually no wind and the seas were flat, perfect for a 5 hr trip. The water surface temperature had dropped even more and was between 18-19 deg. C; this gave me little hope for getting good game fish. As we trolled along we found small pockets of warmer water of around 24 deg. C.
We started out by trying to get some live bait, but there was nothing to be found and so I set a spread of 6 small lures, I headed south along the back line and let out my 1st lure and was busy with the second and as the boat got to speed we got a hit on the 1st lure and landed a nice sized Eastern Little Tuna. This got my hopes up but we got no more hits and trolled all 6 lures for some time when the deep runner got hit and we landed a nice Sarda Sarda.
We then turned north and headed towards reef no. 1 along the 50m contour line with larger lures and got no further hits.
We fished bottom on reef no.1 and landed a nice sized Englishman and several other species of fish before heading home.
I hope the water warms up soon.
