I have been amazed through the years at the size and stength of redfish in the Mosquito Lagoon and Indian River Lagoon. Fighting these monsters on light tackle is even more of a challenge. These big reds swim in schools fo 200 plus and sometimes the schools can be over 1000 fish. The water will literally turn red from the sheen of their bodies.
These fish are mostly caught on live or cut bait, but they will eat artificials. What is really awesome is when they eat a top water plug. Because a redfish's mouth is on the bottom part of his head they must lift their head out of the water to eat the plug. It sounds like someone dropping a bowling ball off the platform four feet above the water. My favorite plugs arethe MirrOLure Top Dogs, She Dogs, and Poppa Dogs. They all work great.
Once you have hooked a big redfish you really just hang on for the ride. They can peel some line and make a drag scream. Usually they will make two or three good runs of at leats 50-60 yards. Having the drag set right is very important when you are using 15 pound test Power Pro with a 20 pound leader.
Come on down to Florida and get in on the action. Titusville is only 45-50 minutes from Orlando, Florida.
