CALCASIEU RIVER The Calcasieu River has been producing great stringers of fish but the rains in northern parishes could cause river to have a major rise reports Travis Merritt. Currently, anglers should focus on spawning areas and drains leading to spawning areas. A 1/4 ounce spinnerbaits in chartreuse/white or a shallow crankbait are great lures to work spawning ares. Merritt suggest banks with gradual slopes as bass will use these to spawn. Also focus on drains and canals. In the West Fork, the Houston river has many drains that lead into marshes. Ray Bustillo and Sanford Fontenot made their usual weekend trip to the Calcasieu and in a morning caught 15 fish with the best 5 going around 9 to 10 pounds, states Ron Castille. Both of them had quality bass in the 2.75 pound class. They caught most of their fish on medium running crankbaits in the Westfork area.
