"The Calcasieu River is high with mostly muddy to stained conditions" says tournament angler Travis Merritt. Rains Monday and Tuesday only added insult to injury. The West Fork is stained and the main river is muddy to Bayou Serpent and stained above there. Anglers and boaters should be very careful on the river as large amount of debris is floating down the river and several boats have been damaged in recent days. "Fishing is not great but not bad" reports Merritt. Shallow, wide wobbling crankbaits are still the baits of choice for tournament winners.
Color suggestions include shad colors in the West Fork with stained conditions and crawfish on river with very stained to muddy water. He also suggest that anglers who prefer to flip soft plastics should try the new Berkley Crazy Legs Chigger Craw in junebug with a 3/16 ounce weight in light current and 3/8 to 1/2 in heavy current. The backwater areas are not producing right much now due to high water.
