Big Lake reports have one common thread.....wind....lots of wind! Local tackle retailer and avid angler, Greg Vidrine, states that "With winds shifting almost daily and not laying down for very long, well, lets just say its pretty muddy! " He adds that if winds back off, even for a few hours, you can catch fish if you can get to the lake. They are biting extremely well.
Vidrine and a group of friends made a recent Big Lake trip that produced good catches of reds, specks and flounder using Berkley's Gulp! to catch all three species. Some key, successful protected places were coves near the weirs, LNG Canal as well as protected areas in West Cove. In addition, there were good reports of top water bites using Spooks or Mirrorlure- type baits. The salinity level is really high right now which will be good for bringing the trout back up to the Prien Lake area.
It (high salt content) is also beneficial in helping the lake to clear-up winds in a shorter period of time. Most experienced Big Lake anglers expect the winds to back off in a few weeks as we get into May. Because of constant high winds, the Thursday Afternoon Big Lake Tournaments are postponed until the first Thursday of May. For more info call 337-240-3332
