The chinook salmon fishing in Barkley Sound has been fairly good for a couple of weeks. The migratory route of the salmon coming down the west coast of Vancouver Island is on the back door of Barkley Sound. Barkley Sound is a great resting and feeding area for these salmon. The Sound is known for its rich and plentiful bait fish which Chinook and Coho come in to feed on.
The last couple of weeks has seen the fishing become very good. The salmon swimming the waters are becoming more numerous as much of the commercial fishing to the North has been curtailed. This allows for mor salmon to swim or enter nearby waters.
On Wednesday guests from Florida fished with guide Doug and were treated with four good sized Chinook from 20 to 24 pounds. Catching fish was not the only positive. Killer Whales entered the fishing grounds and put on a great show and for some reason did not really scatter the salmon. Eagles and even a black bear were fantastic to watch.
The fishing was slow up until the noon hour flood tide. From 12 noon until about 2pm the Florida couple had opprtunity to boat 4 of 6 Chinook which all weighed 20 to 24 pounds. Anchovy in either a Rhys Davis army truck or UV green teaser head behind a green glow in the dark hotspot flasher were hot. This was altogether different from the fishing a couple of days earlier where the salmon would not touch an anchovy but preferred the green-glow 4 inch coyote spoon. Most of the played fish were hooked on the calm non ocean side of Swale Rock in 80 to 95 feet of water.
We are expecting the Barkley Sound fishing to remain hot through July. By the end of July not only will migratory fish be in the Sound but also salmon which are coming back to the many rivers of Barkley Sound and the Port Alberni Inlet.
