BIG LAKE Tropical systems continue to impact Big Lake and other similar areas along the Gulf. High tides and winds will make the south end of the fishery almost un-fishable for several days. "These conditions will push much of the fish population to the north end of the lake" says Lake Area Marine pro David Rabalais.
Basically, day after day of high south winds have made conditions at the south end of the lake as well as The Jetties mostly unproductive. Rabalais suggest Turners Bay as well as the northern part of the ship channel as places which are holding fish. High tides from the tropical system will also make Prien Lake, Interstate 10 area and even all of the way to the salt water barrier good possibilities for catching fish later this week and weekend.
Rabalais also mentioned the areas near the Port of Lake Charles and Haymark as other areas that should hold fish. Action really slowed down at Calcasieu Point, according to operator, Elaine Huck. She stated "A few people did catch good (fish) but most came back scratching their heads wondering where the fish went." She did agree with Rabalais about Prien Lake and Haymart being productive areas.
She also mentioned that the LNG Canal produced the most fish this week according to anglers who fished out of Calcasieu Point. Rabalais suggested Berkley Gulp! Shrimp and Mullet (3 and 4 inch versions) in Nuclear Chicken, New Penny and Natural Shrimp fished on lead heads as well as under corks.
In addition, he mentioned live shrimp and mullet fished on Carolina Rigs or under corks are all producing specs, reds and a few flounder. The tropical system was in the process of coming on shore at the time this column was being prepared. Hopefully, the impact on our area will be minmimal.
