Water temperatures are cooling off with Big Lake running in mid 60s with The Gulf at Cameron a few degrees warmer 68 to 70. Greg Vidrine, well known Lake Area tackle retailer, says that Lake Calcasieu (Big Lake) is now officially a fresh water reservoir. But despite all the rains he says fishing continues to be good if you can get out of the wind and find decent water. He states the last few cold fronts have pushed shrimp from the marshes into the lake there is plenty of action of good numbers of trout but not too many big fish. he also reminds anglers that the flounder are making there way back to the gulf and many anglers are racking up along the points and cuts of the lower ship channel. All the fresh water has slowed that pattern somewhat.
As far as popular plastics Vidrine says Berkley Gulp Saltwater Series is the leader with New Penny or Glow being top colors followed by Norton's sand eels or bull minnows. Fishing industry news has it that the ever popular Corky bait company has been sold to Mirrorlure so these baits should be easier to get in the very near future.
Captain Kevin Broussard, one of Big Lakes many excellent guides, said that they had four boats out the past two days and caught good numbers of both reds and trout. The have been catching 30 plus trout each day working the birds in The Turners Bay area throwing sand eels on light jigheads using both 1/8 and 1/4 ounce sizes. The lighter jighead does fall slower and will catch more fish on days when the fish are not as active. Broussard also said Black Lake is still excellent. Anglers are reminded that duck season starts Saturday and the area inside The Wiers are off-limit until after duck season but you can still fish out front.
