Chinook fishing is good off the Grande to Whalebone area of Gabriola. Thrasher, the Cannery, and the Fingers are also producing fish. Bottombouncing in 160 to 180 feet of water is the preferred method, but the herring are somtimes stratifying in shallower water as they've just spawned. Strip or whole baits fished in clear green scale Rhys Davis teasers, Coyotes in black/white or green glow/silver, or hoochies in Army Truck or green spackleback are the lures of choice. There are lots of undersized chinook in the area, and the legal fish are weighing 8 to 13 pounds. Prawning is good off the Flat Top Islands. Try tuna cat food fished at 320 to 350 feet for best results. Good fishing!
