The weather was good but the winds in Barkley Sound were coming from all directions for two of three days over this past weekend. Trolling a Cop Car Coyote Spoon and Anchovy in a green/glow teaser head off of Meares Bluff (Effingham)on Friday and Saturday was at times not easy but the fishing was good. On Friday guests had an opportunity to play 12 great fish which all hit hard and fought fantastically. Some of the Chinook that weighed fifteen to seventeen pounds were like thirty to thirty-five pound salmon. The Cop Car four inch spoon was working very well as four of the salmon brought into the boat were on this type of tackle. The crew actually only hung on to five of the twelve fish. A sixth fish as it was being netted was lost to a seal. Most of the fish were in ninety to a hundred feet of water. The deepest was picked up at 135 feet. Saturday again was very windy and after putting three into the boat location was changed to a calm spot which fortunately was a very hot spot. Fishing just behind Swale Rock in Barkley Sound and out of the wind three more twenty pound Chinook were boated. Two of these hit anchovy while the other was on a Cop Car spoon.
We are really expecting June and July to be good months. Coho will join the mix fairly soon. Most of the fish that we are fishing in the Sound are migratory fish which come in to feed on the bait balls. Barkley Sound is in very protected waters and most often the conditions are ideal.
