The year 2009 has seen some incredible salmon fishing in the Barkley Sound and offshore waters of western Vancouver Island. The great fishing began in June and continues to be reasonably good. Report that the same kind of fishing is expected in 2010 are very encouraging. We are currently fishing areas of Bamfield especially along the Bamfield Wall and the backside of Fleming Island. Pill Point has been a very good spot over the last few days with many Coho in the area and Chinook have also been strong with one salmon being landed at an incredible weight of 47 pounds. There are still plenty of Coho coming down the beach of Vancouver Island with many of these salmon likely coming into Barkley Sound and making their way to local rivers and streams. Fishing should continue to be very good for a few more weeks. The salmon are hitting anchovy in a pearl or chartreuse Rhys Davis Teaser Head behind a purple-gold or red-gold hot spot flasher. Various white hootchies and green hootchies are also working with shorter leader lengths ranging from 32 to 36 inches. Expect some great fishing into October and look forward to a great 2010 season.
