December is a month filled with excitement both on and off the water. My wife and I just got back from three long days at Disney with both of our kids. Even though we had some great times together, I couldn't keep myself from daydreaming about the incredible action I left behind.
During the past few weeks every trip has included at least one sailfish release and on other trips we have had several encounters. A couple of weeks ago while fishing with Eric Sidor and his father Ozzie we caught and released a sailfish on his very first bait in the water. Eric was thrilled because he doesn't get many opportunities to catch sails in his home waters of Tampa.
On the very next trip we were targeting kings on the reef and it was tough. We were getting bites but the fish were just a little wire shy. We made some quick changes and came very close to filling our limit for the day. Almost all of these fish were caught on very light lines. The best catch was made by angler Anthony Caba on his very own 6# spinning rod. Congratulations to Tony and his proud father Ed!
Tournament fishing is now in full swing and on the weekend of 12/13 and 12/14 my tournamnet team and I were invited to compete with over fifty other boats in the annual "Sailfish Kickoff" tournament. Our team was fishing with one new angler and a different boat so we did have some obstacles to overcome. Despite these challenges, I felt that everyone rose to the occasion as we released 4 of 7 fish that were hooked. Along with sails we also boated quite a few very nice dolphin and kingfish in the "sporty" conditions.
Now, I'm back and ready to bend some rods once again. I have a couple of trips scheduled for later this week and expect the hot action to continue. Below are some pictures of recent action. Finally, I'd like to wish everyone a safe and joyous holiday season. Give me a call if you'd like to take a break from the festivites and give yourself or someone else a nice memory.
Happy Holiday and New Year,
Capt. Orlando Muniz
