BIG LAKE
Some really big trout have been caught this past week as a 7.40, 6.70 and several five pounders have been brought in at Calcasieu Point, according to Elaine Huck. Some nice trout have also been coming from the LNG Canal where a 5.12 was weighed in after being caught there which is located close to Calcasieu Point. LNG is normally known for lots of fish but big trout from the area are not as frequent. As of the last update in the CCA STAR tournament, Dale Weiman's 8.25 trout is till in the lead. Anglers have until Labor Day to beat Weiman's big trout.
Turners Bay is still producing nice fish along with LNG giving up both quality trout and some beautiful flounder. Other often mentioned hot spots include The Weirs(Lambert's and Grand Bayous) along with The Washout and Nine Mile Cut. When wind conditions are right, the east side of the Jetties have really been giving up lots of fish. Huck also reports that more people are fishing in Moss Lake with a few birds working there.
"My last trip out this week we limited on nice trout" stated Lake Area Marine pro, David Rabalais. They caught most of these fish fishing live bait along the ship channel from Nine Mile Cut all the way to the beach jetties. They started early with topwater and Berkley Gulp! Shrimp (soft plastics) and then went to live bait mid morning. The jetties are really producing a lot of good trout and reds and this will continue for a few more weeks.
The rigs at Johnson Bayou and Grand Chenier are also producing some good fish with the best times early morning. Rabalais also mentioned catching several flounder on the flats just off the ship channel. The weather this weekend is calling for some north winds which will make these areas even better. You might should make sure your weekend plans includes a fishing trip to Big Lake.
