"Lots of speckled trout and redfish continue to come to the cleaning table" says Hackberry's Captain Buddy Oaks. He also mentioned schools of highly sought after tripletail and ling are just off the beach. Hackberry's R & G night fishing boat, The Night Stalker II, is bringing in high numbers of speckled trout, sand trout and reds without having to fight the hot sunshine.
Lake Area pro angler, David Rabalais, says that the northern end of the lake in Prien and area near interstate bridge are producing good catches of trout with anglers working topwater lures (Top Dogs, She Dogs, Super Spooks) on the edge of the channel early mornings. After sun gets higher then go to lead head jigs with Berkley Gulp! after sun gets higher and fishing slightly deeper in the edge of the channel. Popular sizes of lead head jigs are one quarter and three-eighths ounce.
Rabalais also stated that all that is needed are a couple of cool fronts to move shrimp out of the marshes and into the lake where birds will show us the fish. What a fun time of the year!! He mentioned that Turners Bay and West Cove are two of the areas where the birds start working first.
"Wow, what a Labor Day weekend of fishing" was the message from Calcasieu Point's Elaine Huck. She also stated "It had to be a record weekend of catching fish and was the most fish ever cleaned out here since we have been opened." Huck stated that the cool weather must have pushed the reds out of the marshes because it seemed like everyone had their limits....moms, dads, boys and girls! She received great enjoyment seeing so many little anglers going fishing and wanting to show her the big fish they caught.
Several weighed flounder and trout CCA New Tide drawings for the aluminum boats. Huck says the weather has been good so fish have been caught The Jetties to Prien Lake. Numerous places along the Ship Channel have been awesome the past few weeks including The Washout, Nine Mile Cut and Joe's Cove. Obviously The Weirs and Turners Bay are still producing. Flounder catches have also been excellent.
