Large numbers of really big King Salmon continue to entertain anglers from Henderson Harbor west to Sodus Bay. Most of the kings are weighing around 17 pounds with many in the upper 20's and a 33# porker was taken on Saturday during the Little Salmon River Challenge, based out of Mikes Marina. (More on that derby when I get some information).
We are taking most of our fish in 120 to 300 feet of water. The recent south winds brought temperature way up and we are finding the fish down 50 to 80 feet. Flasher and fly programs remain hot, but we took a good number of salmon on spoons over the weekend.
With all this south wind, brown trout continue to be active in 30 to 60 feet. Any good spoon program will work right now.
Friday I had the pleasure of fishing with Bob Funk VP of sales for Mustad, his son Jared and John Devries from Seaguar. The bite was kind of slow but everyone landed some fish. We experimented with a new treble hook that Mustad has and it is a beauty. Look for more information on this hook in the fall issue of Lake Ontario Outdoors.
Saturday my guys opted to enter the Little Salmon River challenge. We had a great day with double digit hookups but had a mix of big adults, little guys and brown trout. A great catch but nothing that could compare to the big boxes that came in from the guys that made the 20 plus mile run to the shipping lanes. Again all the south winds sent that large school of Chinooks up north. They are laying up there sniffing river water now anticipating their fall migration that will begin here real soon.
Sunday I managed to take Shelley, my son and his girlfriend Jill out for a few hours. Everyone reported a slow king bite so we stayed close and beat on a bunch of browns and took several small salmon in 50 FOW. We were chased in by a storm, but we were ready for dinner and cocktails. Wish I had more time to do this.
On Oneida Lake fishing with jigs has slowed down and now the walleye are showing a preference for trolled baits over the deepest part of the lake 45 to 55 feet. Look for bass in about 6 ft. of water using crayfish and worms and panfish are doing well along the shoreline.
Now is a great time to schedule a lake charter. The kids are out of school, the fishing is excellent and area captains are available for lake charters. Just log on to Lakeontariooutdoors.com There you will find, daily fishing reports, numerous links to great sites and area businesses, as well as lake charters and river guides.
I have This Thursday afternoon open and that is it for July. Plenty of afternoons in august and a few days in September.
This is Captain Troy Creasy, Good Fishing.
