What can you say about this season? If the weather is good, we catch a lotof fish, if the wind blows we catch a few. If it blows hard, we sit on the dock. That is how the season is going.
Weather and wind direction are always a key factor in any successful fishing trip and this past week has proven to be a challenging one for all anglers. The ole saying, wind out of the east the fish bite the least is a very true statement!
Although conditions have been tough on lake ontario thus far, the King Salmon fishing continues to entertain anglers from Henderson Harbor west to Fair Haven. Most of the kings are weighing around 18 pounds with a few in the 20's. We are taking most of our fish in 200 to 300 feet of water. the recent winds brought temperature backu p and we are finding the fish down 90 to 120 feet.
Brown trout continue to be active in 90 to 150 feet with most of the action being in the early morning, with Raider and Dreamweaver sppons catching most of the fish. The water is changing daily as the winds are really moving things around.
Remember the area around the Nine Mile Point Nuclear Facility is off limits to boating. The restricted area stretches 1,000 yards offshore and extends from the Alcan plant to the Sunset Bay area along Lake Ontario, east of the city of Oswego.
On Oneida Lake fishing with jigs has slowed down and now the walleye are showing a preference for trolled baits over the deepest part of the lake 45 to 55 feet. Look for bass in about 6 ft. of water using crayfish and worms and panfish are doing well along the shoreline.
