CALCASIEU RIVER...TOUGH!
The river is very high, very muddy and currently very tough to fish. Area tournament anglers caught very few fish this past week. With no additional rain the river should improve. However, right now I would head to Toledo, Rayburn, Lacassine or Big Lake and let the Calcasieu rest.
He also adds "Fishing in the canals should start to pick up and the frog bite should be great this weekend." and suggests Zoom Horny Toads if the wind is calm and Ribbits if it is breezy with the best colors watermelon/ red or green pumpkin. Also, white and baby bass colored Kipps and Stanley Wedge Plus spinnerbaits are very consistent in Lacassine.
Week one of twenty-two events had the Calcasieu River just below flood stage. The two-angler teams were reminded to use caution navigating the river because of dangerous, floating debris. The tourney started at 4:47 p.m. and concluded at 8:30 p.m.
Winners were the team of Jared Libee and Trent McDaniel with 5 fish weighing 5.30 pounds. They reported catching their fish in the West Fork on Baby Brush Hogs. Runner-up was Shane Cormier with 5 fish limit at 5.20.
Cormier was also the highest placing team towing with Toyota and was awarded $100 Bonus Cash from Lake Charles Toyota. Big bass winners were Doug Guins and Josh Byrd with a largemouth weighing 2.50 pounds and 2nd big bass was caught by Michael and Jimmy Brown with a 1.90 and both big bass winners received prizes from Wendi's Flower Cart. Runner-up winner Cormier reported catching his stringer in the West Fork of the Calcasieu River targeting drains.
