Was supposed to run a skinny water charter this morning but things got fouled up at the last minute. But heck, I had planned to fish today, so thats what I did. :-)
Ran a little ways north and headed up a creek to some knee deep water and started casting. Was throwing a spinner bait and on about the 4th cast my lure landed near a marsh bank with an oyster bar close by. About the time I cranked the handle to start my retrieve I saw a huge swirl about six feet from where my bait hit the water. I knew something stout had just turned on my bait and sure enough, about a millisecond later it was on! My pole doubled up and drag started screaming. I was going, man this must be a way over the slot red! After the first big run I coaxed him back closer to the boat and I went uh-oh, this thing is way too long and skinny to be a red. Then on the next pass by the boat I went d*m, its a durn ol shark. But on the third pass I got a good close look at that beast, and I was staring eye to eye with a big ol cobia!! And he weren't none too happy about the situation either.
But here is the bad news.
Just about the time I was about to get him close enough to put the net on em, he made one big last lunge and spit the hook right back at me. He decided to keep my gulp though. :-(
Didn't fish too long with the wind getting up. Did see a couple of single reds and I hooked a couple blind casting. The conditions were a bit tough.
But it felt good out this morning and things are definately getting more active. Also heard that the spaniards have arrived on the beach.
Ya'll catch em up.
