BIG LAKE
"Most trout being caught are currently running a little bigger than average" says Lake area fishing pro, David Rabalais. He says that a lot of trout are in the 1.5 to 4.5 pound category with others even larger. Some of the biggest trout are coming on top water patterns. Rabalais commented that the cold front and north winds for the past 4-5 days has helped to push some of the fresh, low salinity/salt water out of the lake.
He feels that lake conditions this weekend will be much improved and suggests the areas near Long Point, the Wash Out and West Cove. In addition, he likes the south bank from the Old Jetties to Grand Bayou which are holding large populations of trout and reds. Rabalais mentioned Berkley Gulp! Shrimp, Swimming Mullet and Sand eels as excellent choices for Lake Calcasieu. Gulp! comes in various sizes with 3-4 inch versions the most popular sizes. Top colors include New Penny, Nuclear Chicken, Glow, Molting and Natural Shrimp.
"Fishing improved again this week" says Elaine Huck from Calcasieu Point. Mid-week was very good, she reported, with birds working in The Washout and anglers catching fish on the southern part of the lake with many of them targeting The Weirs. She even said that one boat caught fish as far north as Prien and even a few fish came out of Moss Lake. Anglers are using both live/bait shrimp as well as plastics. Huck mentioned that beginning May 22 Calcasieu Point will be open 7 days a week.
PRAYERS FOR FELLOW ANGLER
Hackberry's Captain Ronnie Biddy is recovering from severe burns from an explosion of fumes in one of the compartments of his boat. While he did receive major burns to several areas of his body including his face, his eyes did not receive any major damage and chances seem good for his total recovery. Biddy, who currently guides with Hackberry Rod and Gun, has been fishing Big Lake since he was 13 and has been a fishing and duck guide for the past 15 years. We wish him the best and offer our thoughts and prayers for his complete healing.
