Orlando Muniz

A lot has happened since my last report so let's get right down to it. First, let me say that sailfishing has tapered off a little even though there are still a few fish around. We will probably continue to catch one here and there throughout the summer.

One of the most sought after fish in South Florida the dolphin or mahi-mahi has finally moved into our waters. Last week saw some pretty good numbers off and on especially early in the week. During this past Memorial Day weekend the action started off hot and then slowed a bit. Even though we haven't hunted for them, we've managed to catch some on our last two trips. Most of the fish being caught haven't been giants but there have been enough of the larger fish to keep things interesting.

May and June are the two best months to target the beautiful and tasty mutton snapper. We've been catching our fair share especially when anchored around the reefs or county wrecks. One of my favorite ways to fish for these snapper is to anchor and chum heavily. Besides fishing the bottom baits for the muttons we can fish flat lined live baits for the tunas, kings, mahi and occasional sailfish.

On days when we've fished the deeper wrecks there has been good action on large amberjack (aka "reef donkeys"), some very large barracuda and sharks. As you can see there are still lots of opportunities to be had. It's just a matter of putting in the time and remaining flexible.

If you're interested in putting a trip together or just not sure which trip is best for you, give me a call (786)266-0171 or shoot me an email omuniz@bellsouth.net. Also if you are concerned about the oil spill in the gulf, let me just say that we are still safe. Hopefully they will be able to stop the flow soon before any more damage is done. Well, that brings us up to date.

Till next tide,

Capt. Orlando Muniz
