The MS river is falling slowly and the water in the marsh is clearing allowing us to get back to what we do best; sight fishing for reds in shallow water. I had another guide, Gary Taylor, and his grandson Jordan out for a day of scouting.
We ran for only about 10 minutes and immediately had a couple of nice reds in the boat. Not wanting to beat up on them too much we took off in search of other reds. And it didn't take long to connect again. We were coaching Jordan in the art of fly fishing and letting him have first shot at all the fish. At one point we probably had 8 to 10 reds around us just cruising around looking for a meal.
The Delacroix area is known as a bass fishing go to spot as well as saltwater fish. We picked up a few bass along with the reds as is fairly normal for the area. It was a great day with all of us hooking up on reds with the average weight between 6 and 8 pounds. Not monsters but very nice fish with the bonus of watching them eat the fly.
Most fish were caught with no more than a 50 foot cast and in and around grass beds. When fly fishing reds in grass the spoon fly is your best bet.
