We really need a break with this weather, it is plain old cold!! We hit the water today with the temp below zero and reached a balmy high of 8 above at 2:00.
Didn't matter today though, as the bite was on from beginning to end. Jay and Bob on their first steelhead trip were spoiled getting into double figures on a bitter cold day.
Most anglers are getting into fish. The Lower Fly Fishing Zone, Schoolhouse Pool, Wire Hole, Ellis Cove and the Trestle Pool area, all have fish. Eggs, beads, nymphs, streamers and spey flies in sizes 8 to12 are working well.
Ice fisherman across the listening area are still all smiles as the cold temps continue to make good conditions for the hard water anglers.
On Sandy Pond there is over a foot of good ice and pike, perch and bluegills have all been biting good, Sodus Bay and chaumont Bay continue to produce good catches of perch as well.
Oneida Lake ice fishing is quite good right now for both perch and walleye on the buoy line at 125, 123 and 121 in 28 to 32 feet of water. small buckeye minnows and jigs are the ticket there.
The Oswego river is running around 12,000, which is a good flow there. Browns and a few steelhead are being caught behind the hotels on white bucktail jigs, tipped with a minnow or worm.
Spring can't be far away and the stream fishing will only improve over the next eight weeks.
Open Dates March 10, 18, 20, 24, 29, 30, 31.
Remember to stay safe, be respectful of others and put a few back for another day.
