Just another fantastic few days of fishing on the salmon river as steelhead are speeding back to the cold waters of Lake O. We are now finding 95% of our fish in the fat turbid oxygenated water that they love so much, when the water temps soar into the 50s.

They are playing with water levels and it is going back to 1500 tonight? Why not save it for May? One has to wonder why they can not give us at least 500 cfs until May 15th. Think what that would do for the local economy!

It will not be long and things will be winding down, but what a ride it has been. Steelhead fishing like most have never experienced.

We are so lucky here in upstate NY to have this tremendous fishery. If you want steelhead, just fish the fast water. They are there, eggs, worms, big flies, jigs, spinners plugs, it doesn't matter they are dropbacks and they have to eat.

Now that it is finally starting to feel like spring, let's look at some of our other types of fishing.

Let's start with the bullheads. Whether you want to spend time with the family and watch the kids fish, or you are just looking for a fresh dinner, bullheads are easy to target, great eating and fun to catch. This next few weeks will be prime time if you want get in on the action. The best fishing usually takes place at night. Just bring some worms, stink bait or old chicken livers, cast out your lines and wait. Top spots include North and South Sandy Pond, The Salmon River Estuary, The Grindstone Marsh and, I was just told that the mouth of the Little Salmon river has been producing some good catches, but all the fish seem to be coming off of the west side near Spy Island. Make sure you get there early if you want a good spot.

The lake fishing is about to get underway in full force as many charter captains have their boats in the water and are ready to go. The brown trout fishing has been good from Sodu Bay north to Henderson. I hear reports of many good size fish as well, with several pushing 12 pounds. Troll slow with needlefish spoons and stickbaits. Again Black and Silver seems to be working the best.
