Here we are in the 3rd week of January already. The recent warm spell combined with a holiday weekend, brought out anglers to the salmon river in full force. Unfortunately most were met with very crowded conditions, clear low water and all but a few reports were very slow overall.

We manage to land a few each day and lose a few more. I know that I lose more fish in low water than I do in high water.

Why? Well for one I am done to 4 or 5 lb test leader and with the low flow every snag is that much closer to the surface. In high water they many fight harder, but it seems the heavy current keeps them above the debris for the most part. Just my opinion.

We are mixing it up each day I keep three float rods and three bottom bouncing rods in the boat. Some are set up with beads others just have a hook so I can switch quickly from an egg sac to a pink worm to flies to jigs. The program now is to get in a spot that you are confident is holding fish, show them everything and wait them out. This is not ny preferred method of fishing but that is the way to go until we get some more fish and water.

The Oswego river is producing some fish and flows are just right for this time of year. Same items as on the salmon river but don't be afraid to throw some big bucktail jigs in the deep water as well.

Ice fishermen continue to haul in some impressive catches of perch but with the warm weather please be extra careful. There are some thin spots on many lakes right now.

That about does it for today. I am out the rest of the week and weekend and then off to a few shows.

February is looking busy for me in more ways than one but I have a lot of open days in March.

As for April I have April 5, 6, 10, 11, 12 & May 9 & 10 as well as plenty of days for the 2010 lake season.
